more books.

Larklight: okay, let me just say, this was a seriously fun book.  The plot was entertaining, the characters were more than adequate--some of them very charming, indeed--and the overall cleverness and humor was just plain great.  This steampunk sci-fi is set around the 1800s, with pretty much the same sort of British, Victorian-era society, but added in spaceships, alien species, other planets, moons, and asteroids, a plethora of pleasing plot-twists, pirates (YES, I love pirates!) and, of course, the nationalistic British.  (Listening to Weezer's "The British Are Coming" from their album Everything Will be Alright in the End beforehand made the experience particularly ironic...)
Anyway, the story revolved around Arthur and Myrtle Mumbly, brother and sister whose floating home of Larklight is assaulted by some sinister spiders.  After a narrow escape, the pair cross paths with the pirate captain Jack Havok and the crew of the Sophronia, which leads them from one adventure to the next in their quest to... well... they do a lot of things, actually.  But I won't spoil anything else.
Anywho, it occurred to me that if I'm giving a book review, I may as well rate it.  Although, really, I don't know what the rating would be for.  Um, like, age group?  Or how good it was?  Urgh, this is making my brains hurt.
In the end, I'll give it a 10/10 for sheer enjoyment.  Bonus points awarded for:

  • Having a narrator with a British accent.
  • Having a narrator who is constantly shouting, "Huzzah!"
  • Swapping to the narrator's sister occasionally
  • Being ------- funny!  (Excuse my Martian)
  • Using dashed lines instead of actual bad words.
  • Combing history with imagination
In the end, I would recommend this book to a teen audience for mild language and some romance, although considering it's narrated by a twelve-year-old boy who makes humorous comments about how disgusting affection is, I think it's safe to label this case as mild.  Still, the overall book was awesome.  I give it a double-thumbs-up and a salute to the illustrator.

hero's guide--book review time!

Okay, so this morning I just finished the most recent installment of Christopher Healy's "A Hero's Guide to:" series.  Let me just say, wow.  And, oh my goodness, that is one of the funniest books I have ever read.  The most recent book, in addition to "A Hero's Guide to Saving Your Kingdom" and "A hero's Guide to Storming the Castle" was "A Hero's Guide to Being an Outlaw", which I think might actually be my favorite.  The first (Saving Your Kingdom) was pretty funny, but I felt so bad for the League of Princes at the end.  However, the last one was both funny and happy-ending, so that was heartening.
ABOUT THE SERIES IN GENERAL:
Pretty much, the basis of the plot is "Everyone knows Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, and Rapunzel.  No one knows Frederick, Duncan, Liam, and Gustav.  Why?  Well, they're only called Prince Charming in their songs, and no one really even cares."  From there it goes to describe ho the real story begins after the ones we all know end.  Like: After Liam wakes up Briar Rose, he realizes she's a jerk and calls off the marriage.  Big mistake, because not only is Briar a jerk, she's an EVIL jerk.  And then, there's the fact that Gustav and Rapunzel don't really get along on account of him being totally humiliated by how quickly her captor beat him up.  And then there's Ella and Frederick.  Ella who loves adventures and Frederick who'd rather sit at home on a silk pillow.  And finally, who could forget Duncan and Snow White, probably the weirdest people you'll ever meet, who live with seven cranky dwarfs?  Yeah... their adventures are downright hilarious.
ON "BEING AN OUTILAW" (contains spoilers):
My only mild criticisms (which are mostly just preferential stuff) is that Jerica was kind of, like, sudden.  I dunno, I would have liked for her to be introduced a little farther back instead of this random Pirate-Princess showing up, seemingly for the sole purpose of being a love interest.  Okay, okay, so she also played a part in marooning Briar and the LoP.  But, come on.
I guess I just liked Val better (fighting evil one jaw-socking at a time!)  :)
Still, I was (as always) a HUGE fan of Duncan and Snowy's antics (along with pretty much the whole Royal Family of Sylveria).  Especially Duncan's speech at the end.  I was all like, "You go, Duncan!  Speak up for weirdos everywhere!"  Also, Smimf.  Oh, man.  Throughout the whole story, I was hoping for there to be more about this awkward side-character who, incidentally, helps out so much he might as well just up and join the League.  Seriously.  I'm rooting for you, Smimf!
Plus, Ruffian and Lila are... well, let's just say awesome.  Really awesome.  I knew Ruff wasn't dead, I knew it!
I can't wait for the next book.  Well, I probably can.  I just don't want to :)

akb0048 rules

Okay.  I recently got horribly obsessed with an anime called AKB0048.  Think of Sailor Moon.  Only with REALLY GOOD MUSIC.  Now add in Star Wars.  And really good animation.  And machine guns.  And a group of singing, dancing, butt-kicking girls who fight anti-entertainment groups across the galaxy.  Yeah.  That's AKB.
Let me just say, this show has brought me very close to tears on multiple occasions.  These characters!  GAH!  I'm one episode away from the end of Season one, so, just, yes.

rune factory and boredom

yeah.  I'm kinda bored.  So... more RF Fanart!  Yay!  I drew a chibi version of Arthur, another character from Rune Factory.  I had a lot of fun--I'm surprised at how well my drawing turned out :)
Arthur is the prince or Norad initially, but after the main character shows up, he kinda just gives you his job and moves into the local inn/cafe thingy.  He's pretty cool, though!  One thing I like about RF is that even though the characters wander around town a lot like animal crossing characters, they actually play a part in the storyline, too, which I feel makes them more interesting.  I mean, who doesn't want to win over the four Guardians?  Or your rival?  It makes the game so much more fun!  So, here's my version of Chibi Arthur :)
