ZERO:

Billions and trillions of people in the world.

And you are one of them.

See?

Billions and trillions of people, breathing, moving, living.

And I am one, too.

And of all the billions of trillions,

One small off-chance, a miniscule calculation—

Says,

Look!  You and I,

For one brief second.

Our souls have touched.

That zero point zero zero zero zero to eternity point

1

Says,

I have breathed the same air as you for a second.

I have glimpsed your earth-bound spirit

And maybe, with a few more zeros—

Have looked into your eyes.

And, wonder of wonder,

Billions of trillions of zeros later,

I have said a word, perhaps,

“Hi.”

To you.

And that “hi”

Might lead to an eternity of billions of trillions of infinite zeroes

That come together despite themselves,

With all the variables and fractured decimals,

The undefined numbers

That sing

Life.

And this is the true wonder of the world.

The meaning of life.

So that for one moment,

We can look into each other and

Destroy

The odds

By seeing something where there was only one big

Zero.
